Wasp control
Wasps are often viewed as pests, despite their role as beneficial insects in nature. However, they can become a nuisance when they form large colonies in or near human dwellings. Wasps start building their nests in sheltered places, often close to humans. Popular places are shutter boxes, garages, terraces, roof trusses or even garden sheds. This can be particularly dangerous for allergy sufferers, small children or the elderly. When temperatures rise in summer, the stress in the nests also increases. The brood has to be cared for even in extreme heat and food has to be procured by the workers. Wasps are true omnivores. Sweet, salty, sour – the palette ranges from cakes, jam and all kinds of barbecued food, meat, sausage and cheese to fermenting fruit and alcoholic drinks. At the various stations they fly to, they may even transfer bacteria such as Escherichia coli and salmonella to human food. At the end of the summer, the insects are often aggressive in their search for edible food. However, attempting to swat at wasps or tackle their nest with various household remedies only agitates them, worsening the situation. When wasps feel threatened, they are more likely to respond with painful stings. Good to know: Wasp colonies only exist for one summer. When fall comes, they die, only the young queen hibernates after she has left the nest.
